Last time out, Albion had enjoyed a 2-1 win at Chelsea on the 15 April in the Premier, whilst United had been on the end of a 0-3 loss in Sevilla in the quarter-final of the UEFA Europa League on the 20 April, which saw them exit the competition on a 2-5 aggregate. Manchester City had already made it to the final, by virtue of their 3-0 win over Sheffield United the day before and in many eyes

Albion were favourites to beat United and proceed to the final on the 3 June.

We shall see. Albion were unfortunate not to have injured young striker Evan Ferguson available for this one, whilst United were missing key injured defenders Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

It was Albion who had the first opening on 6 minutes when David De Gea in the United goal produced a fine save to tip away a free-kick from Alexis Mac Allister, which was heading for the top corner of the net. Julio Enciso was next to go close for the Seagulls as his shot flashed inches wide, after good work by Solly March and Pascal Gross.

Next it was Robert Sanchez's chance to shine, as he made a superb save to divert a piledriver from Bruno Fernandes. The first 30 minutes saw the Seagulls generally on top as Enciso went close with a rasper, which just cleared the crossbar. United had a good spell of possession prior to the break but Antony and Fernandes failed to convert chances and keeper Sanchez made a fine save with his legs to deny Christian Eriksen.

All square at the interval. Half-time: 0-0.

Albion started the second-half the brighter as Kaoru Mitoma went close, De Gea tipped Enciso's effort over the bar and Danny Welbeck sent a header from a corner over the bar. Antony then had a low shot deflected by keeper Sanchez.

Joel Veltman substituted for Enciso on 67 minutes and Deniz Undav did the same for the injured Welbeck on 75 minutes. A fine run by March ended with a fierce low shot which was bound for the corner of the net but the alert De Gea made an excellent save, low to his left, to keep his team in the game.

With both teams seeming to settle for the inevitable, Referee Craig Pawson blew his whistle for the end of 90 minutes and extra time beckoned. Albion should have sewn the game up in the ninety minutes.

90 mins: 0-0.

Extra time started with Mac Allister firing over from distance and at the other end Marcel Sabitzer's header missed the target, when he should have done better. Mitoma then set-up Undav but the substitute failed to control the ball and another chance went a-begging. Keeper Sanchez then came into his own, making a brilliant save to keep out a well-struck shot from Marcus Rashford.

105 mins: 0-0.

The second-half of extra time saw De Gea save from March, Rashford fire wide when well placed and Mitoma fluffing his lines after Undav put him in the clear. The last chance in extra time occurred when March's cross, after a fine run, was intercepted by Fred, with Undav waiting to pounce. Penalties it was, but those missed chances.

120 mins: 0-0.

The shoot-out comprised the taking of a total of 14 penalties. Alexis Mac Allister, Pascal Gross, Deniz Undav, Pervis Estupinan, Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster converted their penalties, as did the first six United players. The thirteenth kick fell to Albion's Solly March, who blazed his kick over the bar. Sudden-death and the cool Victor Lindelof converted his kick to sent his team through for an all-Manchester final on the 3 June.

March was in tears but he will come back never fear.

Stats:

Albion had 15 shots at goal, with 5 on target and won 8 corners, free-kicks conceded - 17.
Manchester United had 15 shots at goal, with 6 on target and won 3 corners, free-kicks conceded - 13.

VERDICT - Albion did themselves and their supporters proud on this one, going so close to reaching the final on the 3 June. At times they out-played United and there's no doubt the vultures will be circling to pick-off the nuggets in the Albion squad, the resolve of Tony Bloom and his board will be tested in the month's ahead to be sure.

Albion line-up (4-2-3-1):- Robert Sanchez; Pascal Gross, Adam Webster, Lewis Dunk (Capt), Pervis Estupinan; Moises Caicedo, Alexis Mac Allister; Solly March, Julio Enciso (Joel Veltman 67), Kaoru Mitoma; Danny Welbeck (Deniz Undav 75).

Subs not used: Jason Steele (G/K), Jan Paul Van Hecke, Levi Colwill, Yasin Ayari, Billy Gilmour, Facundo Buonanotte, Odeluga Offiah.

Manchester United line-up (4-2-3-1):- David De Gea; Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Tyrell Malacia 101), Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot; Casemiro, Christian Eriksen (Fred 62); Antony (Marcel Sabitzer 90), Bruno Fernandes (Capt) (Wout Weghorst 101), Marcus Rashford; Anthony Martial (Jadon Sancho 85).

Subs not used: Jack Butland (G/K), Brandon Williams, Facundo Pellistri, Anthony Elanga.

Referee: Craig Pawson (Sheffield).

Yellow Cards:

Albion: 1 - Kaoru Mitoma.
Manchester United: 3 - Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, Casemiro.

Possession: Albion - 61%.
