In May, the Writers Guild who represents 11,500 screenwriters, went on strike, effectively bringing a halt to new film and tv production. Now, in a move that’s sent shockwaves through the entertainment world, actors have also come out on strike and taken to the picket lines, demanding fair compensation and addressing concerns over the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI).

The strike has seen leading celebrities unite in solidarity as they raise their voices against what they see as a threat to the future of the industry. The last time writers and actors were on strike together was 63 years ago.

This new strike comes after years of frustration among actors who feel their hard work and talent have not been adequately compensated. As film budgets continue to swell over the $200 million mark (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny cost $295 million), actors have found themselves struggling to secure equitable pay compared to what is being invested in CGI, special effects, and the deployment of AI technologies. This growing discrepancy has finally reached a tipping point, prompting the actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, to take decisive action.

A-list actors like Susan Sarandon, Robert Downey Jr., and Viola Davis have been prominent on the picket lines, passionately advocating for their rights. Jennifer Lawrence, in an emotional speech during the protest, stated, “We bring life to these films, and we deserve to be compensated fairly for our contributions. Our performances can’t be replaced by algorithms.” George Clooney added his voice, “This is an inflection point in our industry. Actors and writers in large numbers have lost their ability to make a living. For our industry to survive that has to change. For actors that journey starts now.”

One of the major sticking points of the strike is the use of AI in creating digital characters that replicate the likeness and voices of real actors. These AI-generated characters have been used in various films and television shows, often to cut costs and time during production. But the actors argue that this infringes upon their intellectual property rights, and that the AI characters are diluting the artistry and uniqueness of their performances.

Viola Davis emphasized this concern, saying, “We work hard to bring depth and authenticity to our roles. AI-generated characters may look and sound like us, but they can’t capture the soul and emotion that actors bring to their characters. It’s essential to protect the integrity of our craft.”

The strike has already had significant repercussions for the entertainment industry. Many highly anticipated blockbusters and popular television series have been delayed indefinitely, causing financial losses for studios and disappointment for audiences. The actions could go on for months, with Brian Cox (Succession) fearing it could last till end of year.

With both the writers and actors now on strike, films and TV shows have been brought to a complete standstill. Television is now having to rely on reruns and films awaiting release will have to forego the usual fanfare of star-studded premieres or being hyped by their actors, since strike rules prohibit actors

from taking part in any form of promotion. According to the guidelines, actors will not be able to attend premieres, do interviews for completed work, go to awards shows, attend film festivals or even promote projects on social media while the strike is in effect.

They are also not allowed to attend conventions such as Comic-Con to promote any past or present work made under a union contract.

The implications of these dual strikes reach beyond Hollywood’s gates and into the wider realm of technology and AI development. The battle between actors, writers and studios raises important ethical questions about the role of AI in creative fields and the limits of intellectual property rights. It also sparks debates about the value of human talent and craftsmanship in an increasingly technology-driven world.

For the industry to move forward, a delicate balance needs to be struck between embracing technological advancements and preserving the essence of human performance. Finding a middle ground that fairly compensates actors while acknowledging the potential benefits of AI-generated characters will be critical for the industry’s future.

These Hollywood strikes represent a pivotal moment in the history of the entertainment industry. It is a battle for recognition, fair compensation, and the preservation of the craft that has captivated audiences for over a century.

In other more cheerful news, there was a positive moment for celebration when the Hollywood Sign celebrated its centennial. One hundred years ago, a grand vision was unveiled high above the hills of Hollywood, forever changing the landscape and destiny of the entertainment capital.

Photo (c) Barbra Paskin

The Hollywood Sign, a symbol of dreams, ambition, and stardom, was born out of a promotional effort and has since become a cherished icon, marking its centenary as the most revered landmark in Hollywood.

I remember climbing up the canyon to see the sign in the pouring rain soon after arriving in Hollywood. I managed to take a bunch of photographs which Barry Norman’s film programme incorporated into the opening logos each week.

The sign’s creation was the result of an ambitious real estate project by Los Angeles Times publisher Harry Chandler. Aiming to entice prospective buyers to Hollywoodland, a new housing development, nestled in the Hollywood hills, the idea of an enormous sign was conceived as a promotional tool. It spelled out ‘HOLLYWOODLAND’ in 50-foot tall white letters, each adorned with electric lights. The entire sign was studded with 4,000 lightbulbs and flashed in three segments: ‘HOLLY’, ‘WOOD’, and ‘LAND’, followed by all the letters flashing in unison.

Constructed in 1923, it was initially intended to stand for only 18 months. However, as the years passed, the iconic structure evolved into a symbol of the entire entertainment industry. The “LAND” part of the sign was removed in 1949, leaving behind the “HOLLYWOOD” we know today.

The Hollywood Sign sits on Mount Lee, on the southern side of the Hollywood Hills, overlooking Los Angeles. Perched at a height of 1,680 feet, the sign’s imposing letters are visible from miles away, catching the eye of anyone venturing near its vicinity. Its location grants an awe-inspiring panorama of the sprawling city below, adding to the allure of the historic landmark.

For a century, the Hollywood Sign has held a special place in the hearts of not only Angelenos but people around the world. As a global symbol of fame and fortune, the sign represents the hopes and aspirations of countless dreamers who flock to Hollywood with stars in their eyes, seeking to make it big in the world of entertainment.

But the Hollywood Sign has also seen the dark side of despair when those dreams have crashed. On the night of September 16, 1932, Peg Entwhistle, a young British actress, walked to the sign, climbed a maintenance ladder to the top of the letter “H,” and jumped to her death. She was 24 years old.

Local folklore says her ghost has haunted the famous landmark ever since, leaving behind the scent of gardenias, said to be her favorite perfume.

An essential stop for tourists visiting Los Angeles, every day hordes of visitors make their way to the Hollywood Hills to capture a glimpse of the iconic structure, eager to have a photo taken with the sign in the background. Its image graces postcards, movie posters, and countless social media posts, cementing its status as a “must-see” destination.

To actors within the industry, the Hollywood Sign holds a deeply sentimental value. For many, it symbolizes the realization of their dreams and the culmination of their hard work.

Meryl Streep once said, “When you see that sign, it’s like an affirmation. It’s like saying, ‘Yes, you are on the right path. This is where you belong.”

Brad Pitt has shared his thoughts on the sign’s significance, stating, “The Hollywood Sign is a beacon of hope, of endless possibilities. It’s a reminder that, against all odds, dreams can come true in this town.”

Beyond its representation of the entertainment industry, the Hollywood Sign has become a powerful symbol of Los Angeles’s cultural identity and a testament to the enduring glamour of Hollywood. It stands as a beacon of inspiration for artists and creators worldwide, symbolising the magic and allure of the silver screen.

As the Hollywood Sign celebrates its centennial, it continues to serve as a beacon of hope, a symbol of success, and a testament to the indomitable spirit of the entertainment industry.

Its timeless presence above the city is a tribute to the dreams of those who dared to believe in the magic of Hollywood, making it the ultimate landmark in Tinseltown’s history.

Till next time, Shavua tov.

What's Happening in Hollywood?
