Henry Kissinger hailed as an \u2018artist among diplomats\u2019 following death at 100<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Senior US political figures have paid tribute to the former Secretary of State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger<\/a> has been described as \u201cone of the most dependable and distinctive voices on foreign affairs\u201d following his death at the age of 100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Kissinger, who served under former presidents Richard Nixon<\/a> and Gerald Ford, died at his home in Connecticut, his consultancy firm said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diplomat played a key role in foreign policy in the United States during the Cold War and broke down barriers with China, although he drew criticism from those who accused him of disregard for human rights. Former US president George W Bush<\/a> said he had \u201clong admired\u201d Mr Kissinger and was grateful for his \u201cservice and advice\u201d but mostly for his friendship, and that both he and his wife Laura<\/a> would miss \u201cwisdom, his charm and his humour\u201d.

\u201cAmerica has lost one of the most dependable and distinctive voices on foreign affairs with the passing of Henry Kissinger,\u201d Mr Bush said in a statement issued through his foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former prime minister Sir Tony Blair<\/a> said he was \u201cin awe\u201d of Mr Kissinger. \u201cThere is no-one like Henry Kissinger,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom the first time I met him as a new Labour Party opposition leader in 1994, struggling to form views on foreign policy, to the last occasion when I visited him in New York and, later, he spoke at my institute\u2019s annual gathering, I was in awe of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf it is possible for diplomacy, at its highest level, to be a form of art, Henry was an artist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sir Tony, whose own legacy is partly defined by the Iraq War, added: \u201cOf course, like anyone who has confronted the most difficult problems of international politics, he was criticised at times, even denounced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut I believe he was always motivated not from a coarse \u2018realpolitik\u2019; but from a genuine love of the free world and the need to protect it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boris Johnson described Mr Kissinger as \u201ca giant of diplomacy and strategy \u2013 and peacemaking\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf ever there was an author of peace and lover of concord that man was Henry Kissinger,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security minister Tom Tugendhat said Mr Kissinger was \u201cincredibly generous\u201d and a \u201creally good friend\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell described him as \u201ca titan among America\u2019s most consequential statesmen\u201d, while Mike Johnson, the new speaker of the House of Representatives, said the former secretary of state\u2019s \u201ccontributions to US foreign policy and global diplomacy are immeasurable\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Kissinger was born in southern Germany in 1923 before he fled to the US to escape the Nazis in 1938.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1969, he was appointed as national security adviser in the US before serving as secretary of state under Mr Nixon and Mr Ford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1973 for his work on negotiating a ceasefire agreement in Vietnam but the selection proved controversial, with two members of the Nobel committee resigning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was dogged by critics at home and abroad who argued he should be called to account for his policies on south-east Asia and support of repressive regimes in Latin America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Kissinger made numerous visits to the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He dined with Diana, Princess of Wales, met other members of the royal family, including the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, and had breakfast with Margaret Thatcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He spoke highly of both Diana and Mrs Thatcher \u2013 describing the late princess as someone who \u201cdesperately wanted to make a difference in this world\u201d, and praising Mrs Thatcher as \u201cone of the great figures of modern times\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Years later, after she was forced out of office by an internal Conservative Party coup, having served as Britain\u2019s first female prime minister, Mr Kissinger lamented her treatment, saying her fall from power was \u201cworse than a death in the family\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Kissinger attended the funerals of both Diana in 1997 and Lady Thatcher in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite being well into his 90s, in 2019 he attended a service of thanksgiving in London for the life and work of former foreign secretary Lord Carrington, arriving in a wheelchair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A visit to London some years previously had sparked protests by anti-war demonstrators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A huge puppet figure of him was erected outside the Royal Albert Hall by the Get Kissinger Group, which planned to hold a mock trial accusing him of being a war criminal because of his involvement in events in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
