The Albion headed to the eternal city to take on AS Roma in a UEFA Europa League, Round of 16,\u00a0 First \u00a0Leg encounter at the Stadio Olimpico, the game being covered \"live\" by the TNT Sports cameras and broadcast over the airwaves on BBC Radio Sussex Sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last time out the Seagulls had lost 0-3 at Fulham in the Premier on the 2 March and for the visit to Rome Albion Head Coach Roberto De Zerbi made six changes to his starting line-up from the Fulham game, with Igor Julio, Billy Gilmour, Pascal Gross, Facundo Buonanotte, Simon Adingra and Danny Welbeck replacing Joel Veltman, Adam Webster, Carlos Baleba, Pervis\u00a0Estupinan, Adam Lallana and Evan Ferguson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steeped in European football history, Roma had recently parted company with Manager Jose Mourinho and appointed former player Daniele De Rossi in his place. \u00a0The change had brought about a change of results and Roma were now the \"form\" team in Serie A. \u00a0Stand out players for Roma were playmaker Paulo Dybala and striker Romelu Lukaka, on loan\u00a0from Chelsea. \u00a0On the substitutes bench was former Manchester United defender Chris Smalling. \u00a0Out injured \u00a0was former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With 3500 fans behind them, the Albion faced a cauldron of noise from a sold-out Stadio Olimpico. \u00a0Albion keeper Jason Steele was called into action early on, tipping Romelu Lukaka's goal-bound header over the bar and at the other end\u00a0Simon Adingra's deflected shot struck a post. \u00a0However, on 13 minutes Leandro Parades lofted pass over the Albion's back-line saw Paulo Dybala time his run to perfection before rounding keeper Steele, then slotting the ball into the vacant net. \u00a0A VAR check confirmed the validity of the goal. \u00a00-1<\/strong>. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Seagulls bravely fought their way into the game and Danny Welbeck's bullet header drew a brilliant save from Roma keeper Mile Svilar. \u00a0On 43 minutes the Albion fell further behind\u00a0when a long ball out of Roma's defence was mis-controlled by Lewis Dunk and which enabled Lukaka to run clear and place a\u00a0low-shot past the helpless Steele. \u00a00-2.<\/strong> \u00a0

There was still time for the Seagulls to go close when another Welbeck header saw\u00a0keeper Svilar make another superb save in tipping the ball over the bar. \u00a0

Half-time 0-2.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ansu Fati replaced Julio Enciso at half-time and substitute Fati saw his shot saved by keeper Svilar. \u00a0Minutes later keeper\u00a0Steele made a fine save to deflect Lukaka's header. \u00a0On 64 minutes Roma's third goal arrived when Stephan El Shaarawy's\u00a0cross was converted by the stretching Gianluca Mancini. \u00a00-3<\/strong>. \u00a0Four minutes later Roma were out of sight as another El Shaarawy cross was met by Bryan Cristante who netted with a finely-placed header. \u00a00-4<\/strong>. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To their credit Seagulls\u00a0continued to attack and further chances were spurned by Dunk and Tariq Lamptey. \u00a0A tough night for the Albion at the\u00a0Stadio Olimpico. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was no Roman holiday for the Seagulls as they were taught a tough European football lesson by Roma on the night. \u00a0The Albion defence conceded preventable goals and up front the forwards missed some good chances\u00a0which came their way. \u00a0The Albion would be looking for a miracle result in the return leg at the Amex on the 14 March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
