Mr. and Mrs. Mangel, his parents, run the Adath Israël butcher's shop in Strasbourg, where Marcel spent his childhood until the age of 15. He was educated at the Lycée Fustel in Coulanges. His Polish-Jewish family was forced, after the German invasion, to leave the city and left for Périgueux. Marcel continued his studies at the Lycée Gay-Lussac in Limoges. His parents were arrested in 1944 and deported to Auschwitz without return.

Under the influence of his first cousin Georges Loinger, Marcel joined the Resistance in 1942 in Limoges. It was then that he took the pseudonym Marceau. He says that he "took him into the Resistance because of Victor Hugo's verse, in Les Châtiments: 'Et Joubert sur l'Adige/ Et Marceau sur le Rhin'. I was born in the Bas-Rhin and I wanted to kick the Germans out of France."

His skills as a forger allow him to participate in the manufacture of false identity papers, supply cards and other ausweiz.

He then hid in Sèvres in the house where the children rescued from the turmoil were gathered. He staged sketches, played the clown and imitated Charles Chaplin.

As soon as the Allied landings were successful, he enlisted in General de Lattre de Tassigny's Army and was assigned as a liaison officer to General Patton, thanks to his excellent command of English.

When the war ended, he was sent to the theatre. He studied with Charles Dullin, Jean-Louis Barrault and Étienne Decroux. He gives life to a lunar character who, with smoky eyes and a mouth slit in red, walks on stage a battered body surmounted by the grotesque of a bitos and its failing flower. BIP learns the lessons of No theatre, Kabuki and Commedia dell'arte: "Words are not necessary to express what is on your heart," he said.

Married three times, he was the father of four children.

Over the years, the mime Marceau has become one of the most famous French artists in the world.

Awards and Honors

Marceau was made a commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, an Officer of the Légion d'honneur, and in 1978 he received the Médaille Vermeil de la Ville de Paris.

The City of Paris awarded him a grant which enabled him to reopen his International School which offered a three-year curriculum.

In November 1998, President Jacques Chirac made Marceau a grand officer of the National Order of Merit.

Marceau was an elected member of the Academy of Fine Arts Berlin, the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, the Académie des Beaux-Arts of the Institut de France.

Marceau held honorary doctorates from Ohio State University, Linfield College, Princeton University and the University of Michigan.

In April 2001, Marceau was awarded the Wallenberg Medal by the University of Michigan in recognition of his humanitarianism and acts of courage aiding Jews and other refugees during World War II.

Marceau accepted the honor and responsibilities of serving as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Second World Assembly on Aging, which took place in Madrid, Spain, in April 2002.

Known mostly as a great mime artist, he had a great life outside this Marcel Marceau, known as the mime Marceau, was born Marcel Mangel on March 22, 1923 in Strasbourg.
