ST. JAMES' PARK, NEWCASTLE.

Following their win over Aston Villa at the Amex, the Albion were off on their travels again, this time to the North East to take on Newcastle United in the Premier at St. James' Park, the match being covered by BBC Radio Sussex Sport.

Last time out the Albion beat Aston Villa 1-0 at home on the 5 May and for the visit to St. James' Park Head Coach Roberto De Zerbi made one change to his starting line-up from the Villa game, with Julio Enciso replacing the injured Joao Pedro.

Previously, the Magpies had enjoyed a 4-1 win at Burnley on the 4 May and for Albion's visit Head Coach Eddie Howe made one change from that game, with Elliott Anderson coming in for the injured Callum Wilson.

Earlier this season, in the reverse fixture at the Amex on the 2 September 2023 the Seagulls beat Newcastle 3-1 with Evan Ferguson netting a hat-trick (27m, 65m & 70m) with Callum Wilson (90+2m) scoring a late consolation for the Magpies.

Last season it was 0-0 at the Amex on the 13 August 2022 and 4-1 to Newcastle at St. James' Park on the 18 May 2023, with their goals coming from Deniz Undav (22m, own goal), Dan Burn (45+4m), Callum Wilson (89m) and Bruno Guimaraes (90+1m). Albion's goal was scored by Deniz Undav (51m). After a quiet start in which the teams sounded each other out, the Albion took the lead on 18 minutes when Pascal Gross's corner was headed into the mix where the alert Joel Veltman was on hand to prod the ball home from close-in. It was the Dutchman's first goal for the Albion in fourteen months.1-0.

The Seagulls were dominating proceedings at this stage and Simon Adingra and Julio Enciso saw their efforts go close to increasing Albion's lead. In an isolated raid by the hosts Albion keeper Bart Verbruggen made a fine save to keep out a volley from Sean Longstaff. On 40 minutes Albion lost the services of scorer Veltman to injury, Tariq Lamptey substituting. In the final minute of first-half time added on the Magpies conjured up an equaliser when Anthony Gordon eluded his marker, Lamptey, ran down the left, found Elliott Anderson, whose pass found Longstaff who slammed the ball home from close-range to level the scores. 1-1. Save for the late equaliser a good first-half for the Seagulls.

Halt-time 1-1.

The home side were fast out of the blocks at the start of the second-half and early on keeper Verbruggen produced an excellent save in deflecting an Alexander Isak effort over the bar. Newcastle were now in the ascendancy as Bruno Guimaraes sent a shot over the bar and substitute Harvey Barnes saw his close-range shot saved by Verbruggen and the same player fired wide when well-placed. The Seagulls were defending well and were happy to see Gordon's goal chalked off for offside and a late appeal for a penalty for a foul on Gordon was turned down by Referee Darren England. The Seagulls saw out the closing minutes with ease for a well-earned draw.

Final-score 1-1.

Match stats:
Albion had 15 attempts at goal, with 4 on target and won 4 corners, free-kicks conceded - 16.
Newcastle had 18 attempts at goal, with 7 on target and won 8 corners, free-kicks conceded - 9.

TO SUM UP - Considering the number of players unavailable, a workmanlike performance by the Albion saw them attain a well-deserved draw on Tyneside. It was good to see Joel Veltman score his fourth Albion career before he was forced to go off injured on 40 minutes.

Ironically, Paraguayans Julio Enciso (Albion) and Miguel Almiron (Newcastle) received yellow cards for simulation during second-half play. Now for two home games against Chelsea and Manchester United to close Albion's seventh season in the Premier League.

Albion line-up (4-2-3-1):- Bart Verbruggen;
