\u00a0 at \u00a0 ST. \u00a0 JAMES' \u00a0 PARK, \u00a0 NEWCASTLE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matchday 8 saw Albion travel to the North East to take on Newcastle United in the Premier at St. James' Park, the match being covered by BBC Radio Sussex Sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last time out the Albion had enjoyed a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier at the Amex on the 6 October and for the visit to St. James' Park the Albion made three changes to their starting line-up from the Tottenham game, with Igor Julio, Yasin Ayari and Evan Ferguson coming in for\u00a0Adam Webster (injured), Yantuba Minteh (injured) and Kaoru Mitoma. \u00a0It was Ferguson's first start of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their previous outing in the Premier. the Magpies had drawn 0-0 at Everton on the 5 October and for Albion's visit Newcastle made two changes to their starting line-up from the Everton game, with Tino Livramento and Alexander Isak replacing Kieran Trippier (injured) and Harvey Barnes. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Newcastle\u00a0starting line-up was former Albion defender Dan Burn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last season in the Premier, it was 3-1 to the Albion at the Amex on the 2 September 2023, with Evan\u00a0Ferguson netting a hat-trick (27m, 65m, 70m) for the Seagulls and Callum Wilson (90+2m) scoring Newcastle's consolation. \u00a0The return game at St.James' Park on the 11 May 2024 ended 1-1, with Joel Veltman (18m) scoring for the Albion and Sean Longstaff (45+5m) equalising for the Magpies. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was all Newcastle from the start and it was Magpies returning striker Alexander Isak who was at the\u00a0forefront. \u00a0Early on Isak's goalbound shot was inadvertently blocked by fellow forward Jacob Murphy. \u00a0Further goal attempts by Isak and Fabian Schar just missed the target. \u00a0Just past the half-hour mark Bruno Guimaraes through-ball sent Isak clear on goal but Albion keeper Baet Verbruggen had other\u00a0ideas and made an excellent save to deflect the Swedish international's shot. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 35 minutes the\u00a0Seagulls took a surprise lead when Lewis Dunk's long pass found Danny Welbeck who exchanged\u00a0passes with Georginio Rutter before firing a low shot beyond Newcastle keeper Nick Pope. \u00a0It was\u00a0Welbeck's fifth goal of the season. \u00a0<strong>1-0. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The home side responded with Anthony Gordon sending in a powerful volley which keeper Verbruggen parried away. \u00a0 Albion's defensive work had been spot on first-half. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Half-time 1-0.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Albion conjured up a couple of chances at the start of the second-half, firstly Dunk fired over the bar from a Yasin Ayari corner and then Welbeck had a shot saved by keeper Pope. \u00a0Next, it was Newcastle\u00a0on the offensive, with Gordon sending a header over the bar, keeper Verbruggen making two fine saves to deny Isak, some fine defensive work by Igor Julio prevented Joe Linton from pulling the trigger and it was hero Verbruggen again as he kept out a volley from Isak. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then former Albion defender Dan Burn made a fine defensive intervention to prevent Ferdi Kadioglu increasing Albion's lead. \u00a0With ten\u00a0minutes to go striker Danny Welbeck was stretchered off after sustaining what looked like a serious\u00a0 back injury. \u00a0However, it was later reported that the striker had travelled back to Brighton with the Albion party. \u00a0It was Verbruggen again, this time saving from Gordon and keeper Pope was in the action, saving\u00a0shots from substitutes Kaoru Mitoma and Mats Wieffer. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was still time for drama in time added on, as Verbruggen made yet another fine save to keep out a shot from substitute Harvey Barnes and Burn\u00a0had a goal disallowed for offside. \u00a0This was the Magpies first home defeat since January 2024, when\u00a0Champion's Manchester City won 3-2 at St. James' Park. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An excellent afternoon's work by the Albion\u00a0and three more valuable points. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Final-score 1-0.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Match stats<\/strong>: \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Albion had 10 attempts at goal, with 5 on target and won 4 corners, free-kicks conceded -
