Jewish Music
Jewish Music is a very all-encompassing heading. That is because our people have been at the forefront of every type of music which has been composed and performed.
If I refer to Shul Music, there are the traditional songs, emanating from many centuries and with influences which often represent the diaspora.
In the classics, we have composers from Felix Mendelssohn to Gustav Mahler, Jaques Offenbach to Aaron Copland a and Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin. The last two were instrumental in more popular music such as West Sude Story and Porgy and Bess. There are many more lesser known composers.
Then one goes to the realm of musicals – Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rogers, Lorenz Hart, Oscar Hammerstein, Frederick Lowe, Lionel Bart and Stephen Sondheim.
In more popular music, Simon & Garfunkel, Carol King, Burt Bacharach, Hal David, Neil Sedaka and many others –
Then there are the perfomers in all areas of the music, Jewish people have been there.
So this section is going to highlight individual pieces in each section which I hope you will enjoy.
