BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 3 LEEDS UNITED 0
PREMIER LEAGUE - at the AMERICAN EXPRESS STADIUM, FALMER.
Matchday 10 saw Albion entertain newly-promoted Leeds United in the Premier at the Amex, the match being broadcast by BBC Radio Sussex Sport.
In their previous Premier League outing the Seagulls had lost 2-4 at Manchester United on the 25 October and for the visit of Leeds Head Coach Fabian Hurzeler made one change to his starting line-up from the Manchester United game, with Diego Gomez replacing Maxim De Cuyper.
Subsequent to the Manchester United game, the Albion travelled to the Emirates Stadium to meet Arsenal on the 29 October in a Carabao Cup Fourth Round tie, which Arsenal won 2-0.
Leeds had gained promotion to the Premier last season after finishing top of the Sky Bet Championship and had made a reasonable start to this campaign. Last time out Leeds had beaten West Ham United 2-1 at home in the Premier on the 24 October and for the visit to the Amex Head Coach Daniel Farke named an unchanged starting line-up and squad.
Prior to kick-off there was a Remembrance tribute, which was impeccably observed by those present. Albion were on the front foot from the off and early on Leeds keeper Lucas Perri saved Yasin Ayari's shot. On 11 minutes the Seagulls took the lead after Yankuba Minteh's through pass found Mats Wieffer free on the right and the Dutchman's cross found the unmarked Danny Welbeck who slotted the ball home from close-in. It was Welbeck's sixth goal of a productive season. 1-0.
This early goal saw the Albion take the game to Leeds which saw Welbeck fire wide of the target and then Minteh went on an exciting run, leaving three opponents in his wake, before sending in a shot inches wide of the Leeds goal. Prior to the break Sean Longstaff went close for the visitors but his shot cleared the bar without troubling Albion keeper Bart Verbruggen. A good first-half for the Seagulls and they deserved to be ahead.
Half-time 1-0.
The second-half started with the Albion in command as keeper Perri saved from Jan Paul Van Hecke and then Georginio Rutter fired a shot just past the post. The Seagulls increased their lead on 64 minutes when Minteh's electrifying run down the right ended with a pass to Diego Gomez and the Paraguayan calmly stroked the ball home for Albion's second. 2-0.
Six minutes later and Albion notched their third as Rutter's superb run down the left ended with a cut-back to Gomez who tapped the ball home for his second and Albion's third of the afternoon. 3-0.
There was still time for keeper Perri to make a smart save when deflecting away Ayari's piledriver. In time added on there was a nice touch as the Albion gave two Academy players their Albion debuts when Joe Knight substituted for Ayari and Nehemiah Oriola came on for Rutter.
Final-score 3-0.
Match stats:
Albion had 14 attempts at goal, with 7 on target and won 4 corners, free-kicks conceded - 10.
Leeds United had 5 attempts at goal, with 2 on target and won 7 corners, free-kicks conceded - 7.
VERDICT - Albion bounced back from their Manchester United and Arsenal defeats with a dominant and high intensity win over Leeds. Outstanding for the Seagulls were goalscorers Danny Welbeck and Diego Gomez, plus Georginio Rutter and Yankuba Minteh.
Albion will need to show their best form this weekend when they travel to South London to meet Crystal Palace in front of the Sky Sports cameras.
