Chicken B'Nai Akiva

Coca - Cola Chicken B’nai Akiva Style

The name Coca-Cola chicken doesn’t actually suggest a gourmet meal, however twenty-five years or so ago when my son was very active in B’nai Akiva, in Manchester, this was a regular dish for the Shabbaton’s which personally I resisted tasting for quite a few years, then once I did, I realised it was good!

I want to share this recipe with you as many of the shevet, and people involved with B’nai Akiva Manchester twenty years ago, went on to make alyiah, have served or are still serving in the IDF. My thoughts are with them and all the chailim at this difficult time, this recipe is in their honour, as we pray for the safety of all of Israel.

Ingredients serves 6.

6 portions of chicken this works well with thighs and legs.

2 glasses of Coca cola

I tablespoon of tomato ketchup

I teaspoon paprika

1 teaspoon mustard (dried or readymade)

1 tablespoon soy sauce

3 cloves garlic chopped very small.

One large onion diced.

½ teaspoon black pepper

1 soup spoon soft brown sugar

Method

  1. Mix all the ingredients well (apart from the chicken) in a bowl or a Tupperware, add the chicken and marinate in the fridge for at least 2 hours, its is better if you marinate it overnight.
  2. Pre heat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  3. Place the chicken in an oven proof dish with all the marinade around and over it, cover with silver foil or a lid until roast until it is no longer pink in the centre and the juices run clear, about 50 minutes. A meat thermometer inserted into the centre of the chicken should read at least 165 degrees F (74 degrees C). then it is done.

Serve with rice, and vegetables or salad of choice.

You can multiply this recipe easily to serve a whole B’nai Akiva Shevet!
