The healthy effects of Honey

The Healthy Effects Of Honey.

At this time of the year when nearly everyone is fighting off some kind of cold cough or bug it's extremely hard to stay healthy but one of the simplest cures for winter ailments is honey.

When talking about honey, I don't mean the process stuff that is full of High fructose corn syrup, has no benefits, but good quality raw honey which is actually more expensive has a whole host of health benefits.

When choosing a honey, it's better to choose one local to the area that you live in, as this helps build natural immunity local pollen and allergies a teaspoon of local raw honey each day is recommended to people with seasonal allergies.

Raw honey typically always contains healthy compounds such as antioxidants, amino acids, and vitamins.

So don't be tricked into buying honey that says pure honey, but look for raw or local honey, bye Buy Brighton honey from Dean Jenkins vegetable stall at the top of George Street.

Never store honey in the fridge honey should be stored in the area but it's not too hot or not too cold raw honey after time might go from money to set but to make it running honey again just pull up some boiling water sit the Georgette Lee in it for about 5 minutes and this will return it to its original state.

Honey cough medicine.

I was very sceptical about making this cough medicine but now I swear by it I make a batch regularly.

Ingredients

1 medium to large white onion

half a jar raw honey.

Method

  • wash and sterilise a jam or honey jar that has a good fitting lid.
  • peel and chop the onion quite finely.
  • put the onion inside the jar!
  • pour the honey over the onion till it's completely covered. Place the lid on the jar.
  • leave the jar out of the way of natural light but not in the fridge for 24 hours,
  • after 24 hours the honey and onion would have slightly fermented, take teaspoonfuls of that three times a day and it will ease a cough because of the anti-toxins in the honey you will be surprised how quickly a simple cough will be relieved with this,
  • the remaining mixture can be stored in the fridge for up to five days using it for your cough.

let it infuse for about 3 minutes then drink; this is safe to digest up to four times a day. Ginger contains anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties so with that I'm the honey not only is honey soothing, but it is really beneficial for a sore throat.

The Best Hot Toddy

Maybe because I come from a family that appreciates good whiskey, a hot toddy was always recommended for really heavy cold.

Everyone has their own version but this is the one I remember from childhood and still use if I get a heavy cold.

Ingredients

the juice of 1 orange

half a tablespoon raw honey

one measure of whiskey you can use any type you like but it seems a waste to use a really good malt.

One Cup of boiling water

Method

Heat the orange juice and honey together, you can either do it  45 seconds in the microwave, or the old fashioned way in a saucepan, you don't want it to boil but you don't want it cold,

Stir till the honey and the orange juice a mixed in well together, add the whiskey

pour it into a large mug and top it up with boiling water.

There's no actual medical benefits for the whiskey, but a very good Scottish friend of mine assures me that the honey and orange juice are the beneficial ingredients here, but the whiskey helps one sleep so the other ingredients can do their work!

Honey in first aid

Numerous studies also suggest it works well as a wound-healing dressing. Honey is acidic, which means it may help release oxygen from the wound, further promoting healing.

Applying raw honey directly to minor cuts and burns, and then placing gauze or a bandage over the wound facilities faster and natural healing,

Finally, studies have proved that roar honey can aid digestion and fight off stomach bugs.

A tablespoon of raw honey is 64 calories but it's full of so much goodness it's worth adding to your diet.
