NEWCASTLE UNITED 3 BRIGHTON& HOVE ALBION 1
PREMIER LEAGUE
at ST. JAMES' PARK, NEWCASTLE.
Matchday 35 saw the Albion travel to the North-East to take on Newcastle United in the Premier at St. James' Park, the match being covered by BBC Radio Sussex Sport.
Last time out in the Premier, the Albion had enjoyed an excellent 3-0 win over Chelsea at the Amex on the 21 April and for the trip to Newcastle the Albion made one change to their starting line-up from the Chelsea game, with Danny Welbeck replacing Georginio Rutter.
In their previous game Newcastle had lost 0-1 at Arsenal in the Premier on the 25 April and for Albion's visit Head Coach Eddie Howe made one change to his starting line-up from the Arsenal game, with Joe Linton coming in for Jacob Ramsey.
The Seagulls and the Magpies met three times last season. On the 19 October 2024 in the Premier at St. James' Park the Albion won 1-0, with Danny Welbeck (35m) scoring the winner. On the 2 March 2025 in the FA Cup at St. James' Park the Seagulls won 2-1 after extra time, with the goals coming from Yankuba Minteh (44m) and Danny Welbeck (114m) after Alexander Isak (22m, penalty) had put Newcastle ahead. The third meeting took place on the 4 May 2025 in the Premier at the Amex when it was 1-1, with Yankuba Minteh (28m) opening the scoring for the Albion and Alexander Isak (89m, penalty) netted a late equaliser for the Magpies.
Previously this season, in the reverse fixture at the Amex on the 18 October 2025 the Albion won 2-1, with the goals coming from Danny Welbeck 2 (41m & 84m), whilst Nick Woltemade (76m) scored Newcastle's consolation.
Looking to continue their recent good form, 6 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss in their last eight games, the Albion went close to taking an early lead on 2 minutes when Jack Hinshelwood saw his close-range shot saved by Newcastle keeper Nick Pope and minutes later a curled shot by Carlos Baleba struck the Newcastle crossbar.
On 12 minutes the Magpies took the lead when Jacob Murphy beat Albion keeper Bart Verbruggen to a ball over the top from Bruno Guimaraes, Verbruggen made a clumsy challenge on Murphy outside the area but the winger quickly regained his balance and crossed the ball into the area where William Osula was on hand to head the ball into the unguarded net for his team's opener. 0-1.
The Magpies doubled their lead on 24 minutes when former Albion favourite Dan Burn escaped his markers to head home a Guimaraes corner. 0-2. The home side then had a lucky let-off when Pope's clearance ricocheted off Hinshelwood and against a post and at the other end . Joe Willock's effort was kept out by Verbruggen. Minutes later Verbruggen made a fine intervention to keep out Malick Thiaw's shot. There was still time for Danny Welbeck's header to clear the bar and Osula to fire wide after a strong run from his own half.
Half-time 0-2.
After the break, both goalkeepers were called into action as Verbruggen saved from Osula and Pope kept out Kaoru Mitoma's shot. The Seagulls had now stepped up their game as some neat inter-play on the hour ended with Welbeck's pass to Hinshelwood, who finished with aplomb. 1-2.
Substitute Charalampos Kostoulas was unfortunate to see his bicycle-kick effort saved by Pope. Thereafter both teams missed chances as Yankuba Minteh blazed over from six yards and at the other end chances were missed by substitute Yoane Wissa and Joelinton. Five minutes into time added on Jan Paul Van Hecke gave up possession of the ball to Wissa who squared the ball to fellow substitute Harvey Barnes who side-stepped a defender before lashing the ball into the Albion net. 1-3.
A bad day at the office for the Albion.
Final-score 1-3.
